A quick Q&A with the Director, Lee Ratcliffe
Here, we ask the questions to uncover the journey that shapes the artistic identity of Shug Gallery and to explore their passion for art.
Question 1: Can you tell me about your curatorial vision and philosophy? How do you decide which artists and pieces to showcase in your gallery?
Our curatorial vision and philosophy centre around fostering a dynamic dialogue between contemporary art and its audience. We aim to showcase works that push boundaries, provoke thought, and reflect diverse perspectives.
Question 2: How does your gallery support emerging artists, and what kind of opportunities or programs do you offer to help them develop their careers?
Our selection process is guided by a few key principles:
Artistic Innovation: We prioritize artists who demonstrate originality and innovation in their work, challenging traditional norms and exploring new mediums or techniques.
Cultural Relevance: We seek out pieces that engage with current social, political, and cultural issues, providing a platform for marginalized voices and underrepresented narratives.
Aesthetic Quality: While innovation and relevance are crucial, the aesthetic quality and craftsmanship of the work are also significant. We look for pieces that are visually compelling and expertly executed.
Artist Potential: We consider the potential for growth and future impact of the artists we work with. We aim to support artists at pivotal points in their careers, helping them to reach new heights.
Question 3: What are some of the current trends and challenges you see in the art market, and how is your gallery adapting to these changes?
Supporting emerging artists is a core aspect of our mission. We offer a variety of opportunities, guidance and programs designed to help them develop their careers.
