About the Artist

Jorge Rodríguez (Holguín, 1991) graduated from the Professional School of Fine Arts in Holguín, Cuba.

Jorge Rodriguez's art originates from explorations of symbolic thought and uses irony to delve into personal experiences and cultural, and social references. His imagery frequently portrays a frivolous, repetitive, and serialised world, engaging with metaphysical and religious themes, consumerism, and genetic transformations.

By creating contrasts and manipulating his characters' psychology, Rodriguez's works tackle broad social issues and resemble expressionistic studies of reality.

A quick Q&A with the artist

Here, we ask the artist questions to uncover the journey that shaped their artistic identity and to explore their passion for art.

Question 1: Can you describe your creative process from conception to completion? What sources of inspiration do you draw upon most frequently in your work?

My current source of inspiration is the historical portrait, in which I intervene by deforming its facial features. Distorting forms is my main pictorial goal in which I approach a portrait and its alternative variants, preserving some of the features that make the subject still recognizable.

Question 2: How has your style and approach to art evolved over the years? Are there any particular moments or experiences that significantly influenced your artistic development?

My pictorial style has evolved mainly according to the evolution of my thinking, consequently to my life experience and artistic practice. As a kid, being surrounded by medical books, especially anatomical, was decisive in the exploration, conception and development of my current artistic vision, forming a particular style in my portraits with recognisable features and patterns in their distortion.

Question 3: What messages or emotions do you aim to convey through your art? How do you hope your audience will interpret and connect with your work?

Conceiving monstrous portraits is a way to intervene and alter nature in its established form. Distorting what’s recognisable and transforming the subject is how I challenge the order and symmetry in life. Creating alternative faces evokes enthusiasm in me, as an artist, and questions in the viewer that can touch the plane of a sublime world, where the answers are rare and irrational. Distorting generates an inexhaustible aesthetic universe.
